Flyer

Flyer PictureI made a business flyer for a fictional after school program that would be produced by the South Carolina Aquarium. I wanted the message to be simple – the South Carolina Aquarium will begin offering exciting after school programs in the Charleston area. Because I wanted the flyer to be simple and easily understandable, I did not use an abundance of pictures. I focused on all of the design principles and suggestions that we applicable to the project. I only used three pictures that were blended together with different effects (gradients, feathers, etc.). I also choose a simple background. I used a radial gradient blending a blue and green color. I used these colors because they match the colors that the aquarium commonly uses. I also added a border. I was slightly disappointed that my printer did not bleed on the page. Therefore, my border turned out much skinner than I had hoped. I was very happy with the text in the heading. I used an orange and yellow gradient to fill the text. I thought this was very appealing. I also used different character tools to position the text under the heading. This made the flyer feel balanced.

CD Cover

CD FrontI kept an aquatic theme when designing my CD cover. I wanted the album to represent a calming genre of music so I incorporated visuals of the ocean with classical music. For the front cover, I wanted bright colors. I also wanted a picture of the ocean and classical music instruments. I made the heading text a bright yellow color with a cursive font. The font did not have a bold option so I had to make the text thicker in the character palette. I also filled the outline for the text to help give a bold look. Since “Sounds of the Ocean” was the main heading, I made the other text a different style. However, CD BackI did want to connect the title and my name so I made both texts have the same font color. The back cover was comprised of a simple ocean background with a picture of a diver added in. I thought these blended well. I used the same characteristics for the heading on the back cover as the front. I did arrange it slightly differently from the front to help it flow with the picture more. Overall, I was very satisfied with the CD cover. For the genre of music, the design made since.

AdvertisementI designed an advertisement for a Mexican restaurant. In the content, I wanted to focus on alcohol specials as well as listing location information. For design elements, I wanted to focus on the colors and text. For the background, I gave a dark yellow color. This reminded me of the stucco material, commonly associated with the Mexican culture. I used and orange to yellow to burnt red gradient for the border. The border also had rounded corners to make is more visually appealing. I used a few different fonts for the advertisement. For the heading, I used a font that looked “Mexican” to me. I colored the name of the restaurant to match the colors of the border. For the subheading under the restaurant, I used the same text, but did not fill the text. Instead, I made an out line. When I discussed the prices of drinks, I changed the text font and color to attract attention. I knew that the drink specials would catch attention so I did not worry about making the address overly larger. I also added two pictures in the advertisement to fill up space. I formatted the text to fit better with these pictures. This design was my favorite.

LogoI chose to create a logo for the Stages of Frame company. Before creating the logo, I browsed web pages and pictures of theater for inspiration. One commonality that I observed was the use of the dark colors. Because this logo needed the ability to be used in color and black and white settings, I limited the color use significantly. For colors, I used black and off-white. I used a clap board for the main object since this relates to the theater. The picture that I wanted to use had many elements that I did not want to include in my logo such as text, boxes, and lines. I also had to take out the background. Once I did that, I had to reconstruct the image. I made the image sharper (through Photoshop). I also added the appropriate text. I used only one font for the logo; otherwise the logo would have too much going on. The font looked like it was written with chalk. This worked well with the theme of the logo. Along with the name, I added a slogan. I centered the slogan under the title. I thought my logo turned out well in all three sizes.
